Ilhan Kyuchyuk presented his petition on the use of mother language during election campaigns in the Committee on Petitions

Ilhan Kyuchyuk has presented his petition on the violation of the electoral rights in Bulgaria through prohibition of the use of other languages except Bulgarian during election campaigns in the Committee on Petitions in the European Parliament today.

The debate was attended by representatives of different countries and political parties. Most of them agreed that this provision of the Bulgarian Election Code violates the European law.

The Commission decided that the petition remains open and sent a statement request letter to the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs. The petition will be discussed once again in the Committee on Petitions – this time Frans Timmermans, the First Vice-President of the European Commission, responsible for the Better Regulation, Interinstitutional Relations, the Rule of Law and the Charter of Fundamental Rights will take part in it.
