Dear Colleagues,
In 2007 the European Commission started its initiative for cooperation in the Black Sea region via the project “Black Sea Synergy”. The region is growing market with great potential for development and important centre for the energy and transporting streams. The Black Sea region is one of the main Euro-Atlantic components with strategic meaning for the EU especially with respect to its security. The document emphasizes on the economic and trade cooperation, while the issues concerning the cooperation in the field of security and defense are not covered enough.
Today, the present frame seems outdated. The geopolitical balance in the Black Sea region was violated, and the recent conflict in the region is growing with the annexation of Crimea. In this respect I think that it is time to revise the European strategy for marine security in particular the European Black Sea Strategy by the European External Action Service and Mrs. Mogherini. The new strategy should be developed in full coordination with our NATO partners.
