Ilhan Kyuchyuk met with Mevlut Cavusoglu in Ankara

The two leaders discussed the EU’s solidarity with Turkey and Bulgaria’s timely assistance.

Ilhan Kyuchyuk, leader of the European liberals, is on a two-day visit to Turkey, where he held a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu.

The two discussed the EU’s unified response to the devastating earthquake in Turkey, the donor conference to be held in March, and ongoing solidarity efforts.

“Europe must create a special fund to assist the victims of the earthquakes, which, together with the donor conference, will provide immediate support for Turkey and Syria. In difficult moments like this, unity is everything! The challenges Europe has faced in recent years and the unity we have demonstrated show one thing — Europe can be united, and at this difficult moment, the EU is responding with decisive actions through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. Disasters of such scale are tests of our humanity, and in this regard, I would like to mention the timely assistance of Bulgaria, which was the first EU country to respond to the affected areas,” Kyuchyuk said to Turkey’s foreign minister.

The leader of the European liberals expressed confidence that the donor conference would help mobilize the international community to address the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes.

Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu thanked the support of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) both nationally and at the European level. According to him, cooperation between the EU and Turkey should continue in four key areas: security and defense, energy, economy, and migration.

Earlier, Ilhan Kyuchyuk paid tribute to the great statesman Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in the capital, Ankara. In a Facebook post, Kyuchyuk wrote: “Kemal Atatürk was a visionary leader who turned Turkey into a modern republic, and his legacy continues to inspire us to strive for progress and prosperity.”

Kyuchyuk is set to visit two of the most affected regions by the earthquakes in Turkey — Adana and Hatay.
