We all should be aware that the humanitarian situation in Yemen is very critical. It is an unspeakable shame for humanity for 20 million Yemenis to be living below the poverty line in dire living conditions without access to drinking water, sanitation, education, medical care and essential services. Furthermore, because of fighting and an embargo, 2.5 million people have been displaced internally while around 125 000 Yemeni refugees have fled the country. In this critical situation, the EU, as the world’s leading human rights champion and aid donor, should provide emergency humanitarian assistance to the civilian population in Yemen. Furthermore, together with the UN, the EU should use all of its political and economic capabilities to facilitate peace negotiations. If the EU manages to put an end to the civil wars in Yemen and Syria then it will be a matter of time untilwe find a long-term peaceful solution in the Middle East.
