I supported the resolution because we should completely condemn violence against women and all kinds of gender inequality. It is totally unacceptable in the 21st century that gender stereotypes and discrimination exist in our societies in one form or another. We should call on the EU and the Member States as soon as possible to sign and ratify the Istanbul Convention on preventing and combating violence against women. The ratification of the Istanbul Convention will provide foundations for the launch of a new strategy to fight gender inequality in our societies.
In this regard, it is vital to note that the new strategy should aim to make society more aware of the problem of violence against women through awareness campaigns and facilitate prevention measures such as access to justice, support for victims, etc. Last but not least, we should call on the Commission to encourage cooperation between Member States, women’s rights organizations and the social partners in order to successfully develop and implement a new strategy for gender equality and women’s rights in a post-2015 world.
