Kyuchyuk to the liberal leaders: Energy poverty in countries like Bulgaria is a serious problem

ALDE party co-president, Ilhan Kyuchyuk, met today with the liberal prime ministers, the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the French president, Emmanuel Macron. The meeting took place ahead of the last European Council meeting of the year, where leaders will discuss urgent issues related to the COVID crisis, the situation on the EU’s eastern border and rising electricity prices.

During the meeting, Ilhan Kyuchyuk emphasized energy poverty and the urgent need for an information campaign related to vaccination for countries with a low rate of vaccination, such as Bulgaria.

“Bulgaria is among the countries with the highest percentage of expenditure on energy services, out of the total expenditure of low-income families. This becomes a huge problem when insufficient incomes, low energy efficiency and high electricity costs are combined. Bulgaria needs support both to reduce energy poverty and to deal with the COVID crisis. The new Bulgarian government urgently needs to carry out an information campaign to explain to the citizens the benefits of vaccination, so that we can finally increase the percentage of people vaccinated in the country,” Kyuchyuk said categorically during the meeting.

The European leaders unanimously expressed a position regarding the countries of the Eastern Partnership, which must strive for the development of democracy, territorial integrity and their Euro-Atlantic future.

In addition to the two co-presidents of ALDE Ilhan Kyuchyuk and Timmy Dooley, the meeting of the liberal leaders was attended by the French President Emmanuel Macron, the President of the European Council Charles Michel, the President of “Renew Europe” Stéphane Sejourne, the Vice-President of the EC Vera Jourova, the Executive Vice-President of the EC Margrethe Vestager, Prime Ministers Xavier Bethel, Alexandre De Croix, Kaya Callas, Michael Martin, European Commissioners Didier Reynders, Thierry Breton, Janeš Lenarcic and Kadri Simson and others.
