Ilhan Kyuchyuk, leader of the European Liberals, met with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte today ahead of the final European Council meeting of 2022. The two leaders discussed key issues, with migration and the Schengen Area standing out among the topics.
“Bulgaria has received significant support from all EU member states as well as from all European institutions. We need to unite the efforts and capacity of the entire country to help the Netherlands and Austria reconsider their decision. I urge the Council to make a political decision today to ensure that the Schengen issue will be addressed as soon as possible next year,” Kyuchyuk stated.
He emphasized that Bulgaria and Romania’s accession to the Schengen Area would improve the quality of life for their citizens, enhance economic indicators, positively impact tourism, and improve living standards for Bulgarians and Romanians.
Today, Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced that by the end of summer 2023, a new evaluation under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism could be conducted, and the Schengen verification mechanism could be completed. If the results are positive, Bulgaria could join Schengen.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also expressed his support, stating that Bulgaria and Romania should continue on their path to full EU integration and join Schengen.
Earlier today, Kyuchyuk shared on social media that he and Rutte had agreed to a specific meeting on Bulgaria’s Schengen accession.
