Ilhan Kyuchyuk to liberal leaders: Europe has not faced such a humanitarian catastrophe for decades

Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Olga Stefanyshina also took part in the meeting

Liberal leaders met in Brussels today, ahead of a regular European Council meeting to discuss Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, security and defense, COVID-19, energy, and more.

Leaders representing more than 30 parties from 25 countries across Europe listened to Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Olga Stefanyshina, MPs Kira Rudik and Savik Shuster.

As co-chair of the ALDE, Ilhan Kyuchyuk welcomed the liberal leaders and congratulated their Ukrainian counterparts on the courage and efforts they have shown over the past month, facing daily Russian aggression and fighting for European values.

“This is a humanitarian catastrophe that we have not seen in decades. These refugees will continue to arrive. And our countries must continue to accept them. Millions of people have been forced to flee their homes, and we must lend a hand. We have all seen the horrifying photos from Mariupol, but we are not powerless in this situation. I think we can increase the pressure on national governments to agree on further measures to help both our Ukrainian member parties and the people of Ukraine,” Kyuchyuk said.

Liberal leaders unanimously called for continued humanitarian and military assistance to Ukraine, as well as a permanent organization for the reception of Ukrainian refugees.

The ALDE co-chair recalled that after a meeting of the Liberals, the party’s bureau had taken immediate action to grant temporary membership to Sluha Narodu, a party founded by President Vladimir Zelensky, proving once again the Liberals’ commitment to free Ukrainian citizens.

MRF Chairman Mustafa Karadayi also took part in the Liberals’ leadership meeting, stating his strong position in support of Ukraine and Ukrainian citizens and calling for support and sympathy for those fleeing the war.
