Ilhan Kyuchyuk from Kyiv: We defend the free and democratic choice of each country

MRF MEP and ALDE co-president Ilhan Kyuchyuk visited Ukraine, where he visited the cities of Kyiv, Bucha and Irpin.

During the visit, he and his fellow Liberals met with the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine’s Parliament) Ruslan Stefanchuk, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olga Stefanishyna , Kira Rudik ALDE Party Vice President and member of the Ukrainian Parliament, and other lawmakers. .

Kyuchyuk expressed solidarity with the people of Ukraine: “This terrible war must stop. It is unacceptable in the 21st century to witness such crimes against an entire nation that has peacefully chosen freedom and democracy as its civilizational choice. This is not just a war for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, but a battle of values. We cannot remain indifferent when the international order and the system of rules that were built after the Second World War are called into question. The European Union and the Liberals have always sided with freedom and democracy. Today, we are once again on the right side of history, supporting Ukraine’s European perspective, because I strongly believe that EU enlargement policy is the most effective antidote to war. “

The MEP stressed that, unfortunately, the Russian people also suffer from this fratricidal war, as they have to bear the severe consequences of the sanctions imposed on Russia.

According to Kyuchyuk, Europe has learned its bitter lesson and now is the time to strengthen its strategic autonomy in terms of security and energy. “Among the most important steps we need to take is the diversification of energy resources and investment in our own security,” Kyuchyuk said.

The MEP recalled that just a few days ago the European Parliament adopted two important resolutions related to the war in Ukraine – to protect children and young people fleeing violence, and to facilitate their integration into the communities of host countries and to increase the effectiveness of sanctions against Russia, as well as “bringing perpetrators of war crimes to justice. MEPs who adopted the resolutions call for the establishment of a special UN tribunal for crimes in Ukraine.

During her meeting with the Liberals, Deputy Prime Minister Olga Stefanishyna  expressed hope and gratitude with the words: “Thank you for being with us during these terrible 47 days. But today, here in Ukraine, we are witnessing the birth of a new Europe. This is where the future of a liberal and democratic Europe will be decided. “
