For the first time, a member of the European Parliament is taking part in the event
With a lecture on “European Union-US Transatlantic Cooperation”, ALDE MEP and Co-Chair Ilhan Kyuchyuk opened the twelfth edition of the Month of America in Kardzhali. For the first time, a member of the European Parliament is taking part in the event.
“For 75 years, the Transatlantic Partnership has championed freedom, democracy and the rule of law, trade and economic cooperation and security. The Transatlantic Alliance helped the victory of totalitarian regimes and the liberation of Europe from communism. Yet the world that has entered 2022 seems far from prosperous and secure in many ways. In this context, the transatlantic partnership seems more important than ever. And it cannot be taken for granted and must be upgraded in order for the West to prevail as a viable and attractive model based on democratic values.”, Kyuchyuk said.
According to him, the last year has seen real progress in terms of transatlantic partnership policy. The MEP highlighted several topics – NATO and the turbulent relations between Russia and Ukraine, the EU and the US as stabilizers of the Eastern Partnership countries, the Western Balkans and their accession to the EU, the fight against terrorism, climate change and climate neutrality, as well as coordinating efforts between US and European governments to support and protect democracy.
“As transatlantic partners, we must unite. The United States and the EU must remain global guardians of liberal democracy and human rights. “We need to find new ways to engage with our citizens and respond to their concerns by joining forces to protect our democracies and work together to improve sustainability and strengthen democratic values,” Kyuchyuk concluded.
The Month of America is traditionally held in February. This year is its twelfth edition. It is organized by the Friends of the United States Association with the assistance of the Municipality of Kardzhali and the United States Embassy.
