Ilhan Kyuchyuk: Protecting our shared values unites us and makes us Europeans

MRF / Renew Europe MEP Ilhan Kyuchyuk organized an online video conference with key names from the European institutions on the topic: “EU Mechanism for Democracy, the Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights: A Common European Aim”

“It is important to have an open debate on this topic, because although it sounds abstract, according to the EU Treaty, our shared values of respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and the rights of minorities are at the heart of it all, which unites us.

In her address, the Vice-President of the European Commission for Prices and Transparency, Věra Jourová, emphasized the protection of certain EU prices:

“It is vital to move the debate beyond Brussels and attract citizens and parliamentarians to Europe. In recent years, the Commission has gradually developed various tools to address the rule of law. The President of the Commission, Ms Ursula von der Leyen, has committed herself launching an additional, comprehensive rule of law mechanism for all countries. As part of this new mechanism, the Commission will present its first annual report on 30 September. All countries were treated once in this process, adding both methodologies. “

The online discussion took place in the context of the first report on the rule of law of the European Commission presented on 30 September. According to members of parliament, the report should also include the protection of fundamental rights, take the form of an interinstitutional agreement, replace existing instruments and provide country-specific recommendations linked to non-compliance with budgetary conditions.

The discussion organized by the Bulgarian MEP was attended by the Chairman of the Committee on Legal Affairs, Adrian Vazquez Lazara, the Chairman of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, Juan Fernando Lopez Aguilar, Sofia in` Veld, Chairman of the Democracy Monitoring Group, the rule of law and fundamental rights of the European Parliament, the rapporteur for the EP on the report “Establishing an EU Mechanism for Democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights”, Michal Simecka from the Renew Europe Group, and the rapporteurs for the EPP Group , Vladimir Bilchik and for the Group of the Greens, Sergei Lagodinski.
