Subject: EU-Armenia relations following the approval of Armenian membership of the Eurasian Economic Union

On 20 January 2015, the Cooperation Council between the EU and the Republic of Armenia held its 15th meeting. During the meeting, the EU confirmed its continued support for Armenia’s reform efforts, including its implementation of the visa facilitation and readmission agreements, and it encouraged Armenia to make best use of the assistance it receives to this end from the EU. For the 2014-2017 period, this will amount to between EUR 140 million and 170 million, focused on private sector development, public administration and justice sector reform.

On 2 January, the Republic of Armenia became a full member of the Eurasian Economic Union, which in practice is an alternative to the EU.

Does the Commission consider Armenia’s full membership in the Eurasian Economic Union to be compatible with Armenia’s relations with the EU?

How will the Commission guarantee that the financial assistance allocated to the country in the sphere of public administration and the justice sector will be efficiently allocated?
